July News Letter
Archaeology
Our trip to Shardlow was a delightful experience.
The first stop was at Repton, site of the famous public school. After enjoying coffee and home-made cookies we visited the church. The crypt was the most interesting feature. In early times three Anglo-Saxon kings were buried there.
The church was dedicated to St. Wystan. In the church-yard, at the rear of the church, C.B. Fry ‘cricketer, scholar, athlete and author’ is buried.
We then went on to Shardlow Canal Port. First call was for lunch. We made our own choices for this. Some of us decided on The Malt Shovel and so had our meal by the canal.
On to the Heritage Centre where a very interesting and knowledgeable guide talked to us. A welcome cup of tea and then back to Newark.
Thankyou once again, Peter, for a lovely day out.
Barbara
The Group is now closed until September. I had hoped to arrange a return visit to the Roman archaeology site at Langford Quarry on an Open Day due in July but this has been postponed until August or September. When I know the date I will issue details.
The programme from September to Christmas is just about fixed and I am hoping to publish it at the general meeting on July 13th.

Craft Group
We generally ‘did our own thing ‘ for the June session. Barbara Hey showed some of us how to make ‘string art’ cards.
Next month we will be making place-mats with string and raffia.
Book Circle
There was a lively discussion on ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’. At times it was so realistic that it appeared factual!
The next book, to be reviewed on July 22nd, is The Road Home by Rose Tremaine and will be quite a contrast.
August 26th The Colour Purple by Alice Walker
September 23rd Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.
Creative Writing
This month’s task is to write about ‘An Escape’ also to create a story using a picture. We may read the results to a future meeting!
Gardening Group
We had a very pleasant afternoon at the Bowls Club when we swopped plants, magazines, books and gossip. There was also a Plant Identification
Quiz.
The next meeting will [hopefully!] be at Newark Cemetery Chapel. We shall
explore the site, studying the trees and shrubs and then retire to the Chapel for our cuppa. I say ‘hopefully’ because I am still trying to track down the man who arranges use of this venue.

Outing
On Saturday September 4th there will be an outing to Trentham Gardens.
The cost, which covers the coach and entrance to Trentham is £18.
Please book with either David Blake – 650676 or Barbara Hatton- 683640.
Payment is required by Tuesday August 10th as both the venue and the coach company require substantial deposits.
Trentham has recently been re-vamped and I am told that the gardens are lovely. There are a number of restaurants and coffee shops for meals and there is also an extensive shopping outlet.
Pat Kidder
As many of you will know Pat, a U3A member for a number of years, died suddenly earlier this month. Pat was a lovely, warm-hearted lady with a delightful sense of humour. Our thoughts are with Don at this time.
A Message From Worksop U3A
We are looking to recruit experienced musicians for a ‘Swing [Dance] Band.’
It may be that your branch has individuals who would like to be involved in this venture. Once established, we hope that we will be able to offer our services to other branches in Nottinghamshire by playing at a variety of functions.
So far we have a line-up comprising clarinet, saxophone and violin plus a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums.
We are looking especially for trumpet and trombone players, also more
Wood-wind, particularly tenor saxophone.
